Hamas regularly employs barbaric and illegal tactics during war, creating extremely dangerous conditions for Israeli soldiers to carry out targeted attacks in their ground operation, and significantly increasing the risk of civilian casualties.
These are some of the tactics that Hamas employs that go against all ethics and principles of conduct in war:
- Hamas members regularly wear street clothes to make it difficult to identify who is a civilian and who is a Hamas fighter.
- Hamas terrorists set up traps, using recordings of crying babies or people speaking in Hebrew to lure in Israeli soldiers and then attack them or trigger explosive charges.
- Hamas routinely use suicide bombers and other similair methods of attack against Israeli soldiers that cause immense damage from close range.
- Hamas uses its civilians as human shields, hiding inside civilian infrastructure, underneath public and protected buildings such as mosques, schools, hospitals and homes, and they have been known to stand behind children to protect themselves from IDF fire.
Hamas is doing everything they can to confuse Israeli soldiers, playing off the fact that the IDF will take extreme measures to protect human lives, and trying to make it as difficult as possible to differentiate between fighters and civilians. Given the treacherous conditions in the close combat fighting inside of Gaza, soldiers are forced to make split second decisions that often mean life or death for themselves and their team. These decisions sometimes lead to errors, and often result in both casualties among Israeli soldiers, and unnecessary civilian death that could be prevented if Hamas employed fair and legal tactics of war.
